Who Advised Punch News Paper to restrict its content? |
| Posted: Wednesday Jul 8th 2009 2:43:11pm by Possicon | |
Punch News Paper, a top Nigerian Media outfit has decided to restrict its web content to paid users. The Punch first launched the restriction policy on its WAP application, people were asked to go get scratch card from their sales outlet which are not available nationwide. As someone pointed out on Nairaland that; He’s been expecting this kind of service from a Nigerian site but unfortunately it came from Punch. On our monthly ranking of Most Visit Nigerian Site, punchng.com displaced Nairaland for couple of months (May and June) prior to the implementation of the restriction policy. The recent ranking (July) saw a massive fall of punchng.com from number 1 spot to 7th amongst Nigerian sites and 38th from 16th from overall sites. Punch, a an household name in the Nigerian media industry and the integrity it has amass over the years needs to really understand the model of the internet and how to better serve their esteemed readers. As a News outfit, we believe that Punch makes quite huge money on advert placement (whihch are primarily derived by readers visit) and to see them dissuade from the source is like a river that forgets its source sooner or later it will dry up. Less than 2 months they implemented this policy, the results has been hitting the site hard and I believe if this step is reverse ASAP they can regain their lost glory. The rules of the Internet The internet has proven over the years that, it is an abode for people seeking information from low to no cost at all. Hence the company that understood this have benefited extremely from it. Google currently ranks amongst the biggest firms in the whole world; offers most of its services for free. Yahoo also derives its profit by capitalizing on the free services it provides for the teeming internet audience. Coming to the industry; quite a number of Nigerian news firms operate their sites for free. They really need to put themselves in the shoes of their readers to see if they would pay for news service which is widely available online for free with local content? Most of Nigerian news agencies writes about similar topic hence people wont think twice before the switch over to a competing site. The rule offline makes the model thrive because of; Space and time, Cost of printing, and the primary culture. The rules offline are not applicable as it more or less like a reserve of the rules. Fine, we have web designers and developers, like I have always said, people who knows about the business side of it should be involved taking decisions like this. The trend on the internet is so conscious that whatever wrong step you take, you pay for it dearly! Counting the loses
Can punch still bounce back? Well, I will say yes! The policy just started having effect on Punchng.com, so there is room for them to make necessary amendments now! If they don’t do that now, they will have to pay for it! I think they should understand these basics;
So what will you advise Punch to do now? Or do you think it will work? Drop a comment! |

Most visited Nigerian Sites for July 2009 |

We have extended our coverage to top 30 sites in Nigeria. This month’s ranking is encouraging given the hits these sites amass just under a month. This goes a long way to show that Nigerians on the internet are increasing, or better said; Nigerians are using the internet more. This month witnessed a shock, seeing number 1 site (punchng.com) for last month dropping to number 7 and losing as much as 20 places in overall ranking. What could be wrong with punchng.com? Could it be that their newly launched product (Mobile Punch) as made people vacant their homepage to their mobile platform? Or people are getting angry with The Punch? Well I will say it’s a good thing to see Nairaland.com retaking its place after about 3 months spell in the second place. With this flight by Nairaland, I will like to call your attention once again to the fact that the web has become highly participatory; away from the old push-and-pull format. Nairaland.com being a forum and contributors are open-ended; it has been able to use that to its advantage by bouncing back. People really like talking! Dragnetnigeria.com, nigeriamasterweb.com, 234next.com and unilag.edu.ng popped into our top Nigerian site but slipped 7, 5 and 6 respectively except for unilag.edu.ng that remained unmoved. The banking sector has been dropping since May, the trend also continued this month with gtbplc.com and zenithbank.com dropping 11 and 3 places respectively. Could it be the credit-crunch or online security? The highest mover this month is nigeriagalleria.com moving as much as 11 places; highest in recent times. While odili.net moved 8 places. A welcome development I must say. We have 7 new entrants; highest also in recent time (thanks to our extension to top 30); thenationonlineng.net , sturvs.com , independentngonline.com , naijapals.com, 9jafans, nigeriannews.com and buyright.biz. naijapals.com and buyright.biz are resurging on our list having dropped off couple months ago. |

Facebook continues to soar in Nigerian |
| Posted: Friday Jun 12th 2009 4:14:03pm by Possicon | |
| As Facebook continues it stretch worldwide, it has continued to enjoy same growth in Nigeria. We reported recently about this growth earlier the year, since then Facebook as continued to soar. SNS=Social Networking Site On alexa.com, Facebook has replaced Google as the second most visited site in Nigerian. Personally, I use Facebook virtually everday and it as become part of me. Given the exposure and its ability to keep you connected, I have become an addict member. While Nigerian social networking sites are dropping in visits, (and possibly users) Facebook with its flexibility and popularity, it kept soaring. For our home grown social networking site to be competitive, I think a local content should be considered. Most of what our SNS offer are provider by Facebook which is more sophisticated and flexible, hence the need to develop a Nigeria-minded SNS. Facebook: a social platform that allows you to free share and connect with your friends and make new friends. Total Nigerians: 489,500 (Source; Facebook Ads platform) Male: 303,140 Female: 171,620 I believe SNS from Nigeria can still spring up to catch up with Facebook, given that Facebook currently have below 5% of Nigerian internet population. Do you think Nigerian Social Networking site can catch up with facebook? | |

Most Visited Nigerian Sites for June |

Not an interesting month for Nigerian sites, we have JUST 4 new entrant this month while 7 among the top dropped. 4 of the 7 that dropped were among last month’s new entrant. This I think could be due to launching bang some of the sites came with which could not be sustained. Myjambexams.com and jambonline.org apparently dropped because JAMB times are over! The surprise drop for me is naijapals.com; the last 3 months it started going down with a climax down period which now leads to its exit in the top Nigerian sites. Naijapals.com launched mobile version recently and also conducted member of the year contest, winner due for announcement this month. I wonder what’s up? Despite the growth of social networking in Nigeria, Facebook remains a force; it has succeeded in pushing down Google from the second most visited site in Nigeria. Yet, our social networking sites’ hits are dropping by the day. What could the cause be? Right now none of the sites are among the top sites! Punchng.com overtook nairaland.com last month to become the most visited Nigerian site and as kept nairaland.com at bay. With nairaland.com still shedding a place we want to see how it hopes to slug it out with punchng.com. The sun of sunnewsonline.com as raised as it tramples on naijahotjobs.com and its peer except punchng.com to the number 3 spot. This is really a big rally! Emerging news power house 234next.com has scooped into the Nigeria top sites this month owing to its success in the offline market. We hope to see it sustain this momentum. Other new entrants’ dragnetnigeria.com, nigeriamasterweb.com and unilag.edu.ng. We hope they sustain the momentum and also give the rest a run for their money! On unilag.edu.ng part, I do not expect it to sustain the momentum because its emergence is due to the upcoming post-ume exam for new students. The top mover for this month is osundefender.org; this site has been able to work its way up from the bottom of the table couple of months ago to displace well established contenders. Osundefender.org, though not a spectacular site but its become a force in the online new website. It is first Nigerian state-base tabloid to have gotten this far on the internet. Much of its move could be associated with the struggle between the current governor and the AC aspirant in the 2007 election. The biggest casualty come from the banking subsector, gtbplc.com dropping 4 places while zenithbank.com dropped from 14th place last month to the bottom of the table. |

Naijaborn.com Launched, Lagosians.com moved off Ning |
| Posted: Monday Jun 1st 2009 4:23:03pm by Possicon | |
First public beta of the much awaited naijaborn.com has just been released. Top African developers and entrepreneurs have been working tirelessly on this project. Naijaborn.com with the aim of bringing Nigerians together and celebrate the icons, was conceived by Francis Oghuma of Qubestreet (Nigeria and South Africa) and partnered by Mambe Nanaje of Afrovision Group Cameroon.
Naijaborn.com has debuted and its ready to take on other social networking sites. Built from scratch by the Naijaborn team, it boast of unique features common on social networking sites.
Lagosians.com, a fast growing Nigerian social networking site has finally moved its site away from Ning.com to its permanent server, this is to enable it function properly has ning.com platform is too restricted to make it perform as the founder wants to. Available from today june 1, users are now mandated to re-register on the new platform while they can still interact via lagosians.ning.com. Though the user signup on ning has now been suspended, it hoped to convince its over 15,000 members to re-register.
With this lagosians.com case, I think running on platform like ning.com is not viable for a full-fledged social networking site. This is a big mistake made by the lagosians.com crew. Giving number of users they have amass in its short time of launch, convincing them all to come and register could prove to be a tough task.
I await for more SNS, we hope to see these sites develop a business model that can make them profitable and sustained for time to come.
What is your view about this recent developments? Are they going to scale? |

This initiative is a research work lead by ‘Gbenga Sesan to bring to fore the Internet Usage of Nigerian. A good initiative for us to have straight-from-the-field stats of how Nigerians use the internet. I will call this the “Weblifestyle of Nigerians”. This research is very important for Nigeria at this point in time given that most decisions online has been based on gut and little research. I took this survey immediately I got the update from Gbenga’s facebook status and blog post. Looking at it, it’s an extension of the recent survey we conducted on this site. Broader and extensive! It’s well researched and debated! By reading this blog post you are sure part of the targeted audience for this survey (if you reside in Nigeria), so go right on to the site to participate, it short and concise in less than 7 minutes you should be through. |

Lagosians.com hots up! |

A Nigerian focused Social Networking Site (SNS) launched in February this year (2009). It has grown to membership strength of over 15,770 in less than 4 months. Based on Ning Social networking platform, it aimed to bring together Nigerians/Lagosians home and abroad. The founder Seye Ajagbe, has been a passionate Nigerian with focus on positive things that can be achieved online by Nigerians. The domain has been registered for almost a decade. I could remember when I met Him some 5 years ago and He shared with me His vision for the domain lagosians.com. I being relatively new at that time was thrilled at his vision and passion for a better Nigeria. Lagosians.com is currently being administered in LN USA, where the founder is currently based. As expected, most of its users are Nigerian and the visits (according to alexa) has about 90% hit from Nigeria. I joined the network in February same month it was launched, and since then I have been visiting by and by. With general common features of SNS present on the site (Picture upload, Friends Network, Forum,Events, Clubs, Blog etc). The site is bubbling up and has enjoyed repeated visits from its users. One of its lovely feature weekly update that is sent to users’ email, this make the user stay connected to the happening on the site. To use lagosians.com, user must register a free account with ning.com and automatically service will be made available. Most Visited Nigerian sites for the month of May |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

We have reviewed our ranking for the month of May and saw big surprises. Naijahotjobs.com that displaced nairaland.com last month to become Nigeria’s most visited website has lost its place to third place. Punchng.com rally over both nairaland.com and naijahotjobs.com to become Nigeria’s most visited site for this month.
Obviously, the Ekiti election have something to do with punchng.com rally to the top, we hope to see it sustain this level over the coming months. Could we say also that job hunts have reduced? I think we should ask naijahotjobs.com what’s up. It was laudable to see them at the top but we still are not happy with the sudden drop. Shedding as much as 10 places overall but only 2 amongst Nigerians’ site.
The movers and shakers
The sphere is changing, Nigerians seem to be more social than resource searching… this I guess could be said to be truth by the upsurge in the social networking usage in Nigeria. Nigerians on facebook.com has grown about 50% from January 2009 to this time. Consequently Facebook.com has displaced Google.com as the second most visited site in Nigeria overall. Nigerians are beginning to tweet, twitter has broken into the top sites in Nigeria sitting right at number 64. Keep talking Nigerian!
This month’s ranking, brought about 5 sites out of the top hundred. Namely; gsmhosting.com, nigeriannews.com, starcomms.com, alljobsnigeria.com and buyright.biz. Buyright luckily made our list last month by topping the list from behind. Having reduced its adverts on facebook.com, I guess that has began taking a toll on the visits. Jamb.org.ng also shed considerable numbers. 4 new sites joined the list (myjambexams.com, 9jafans.com, jambonline.org and naijaecash.com). Mynaijanews.com is the overall mover; moving 28 points overall and 7 amongst Nigerian sites. Odili.net shed the most overall with 16 points while jamb.org.ng shed the most amongst Nigerian sites.
